**IN-HOUSE WORKSHOP**
The Brush Dances

FOUR - 3 HOUR SESSIONS
AFTERNOON Workshop (Thursdays)

  • Subject: Learning the brushstrokes for this medium and using them for various subjects.
  • Medium: Sumi-e or Japanese Brushstroke
  • Levels: All
  • Registration:
    - Members: $140.00
    - Non-members: $
    200.00

In this class you will use a method of using a 'brush' that can be used in this medium, or applied to any other that you may choose whether with a brush, pen, pencil, pastel or ... It will give you more strength in you brushstrokes, as well as incorporating your spirit, through movement and breath, into each pass of the brush.

You will also learn how to load a brush with various shades of gray, for sumi-e, which will translate into using various colours in other media.

Roslyn will look to the students for suggestions of any kind of subject matter to incorporate into the instruction.

And this class will be fun!!

Please note: The basics of sumi-e will be taught in lesson one: how to make ink, how to hold the brush, and basic brushstrokes.  If you are not familiar with Sumi-e it is imperative that you attend session one. These steps will not be repeated in the other sessions due to time constraints.

**Note: If you don't have supplies, borrow a kit for a fee, or purchase supplies from instructor.  Contact Roslyn Levin directly. See 'Class Outline including Materials List' below.

About the Artist

Roslyn has been painting in sumi-e for almost 50 years. She also does shodo, or Japanese calligraphy. She has won numerous prizes in both media - nationally and internationally.

Her book "The Brush Dances" is used world-wide and is considered an excellent teaching tool for the use of a brush in sumi-e or other media.

Roslyn's chosen subject matter are birds, animals, insects and nature - just no straight lines, please!

Her studio has been in Dragonfly Arts on Broadway in Orangeville for more than 18 years where she can be seen painting on washi or, if she is not there, you can simply enjoy her wonderful zen paintings.
