Virtually all good paintings start with good compositions. We will look at a variety of best practices when selecting an image and how to interpret the image as a painter. John will demo each stage of the painting process over the duration of the workshop . There will be time for questions along the way and critiques of individual progress as well.

The colour mixes and approach to getting the right effect from colours will be part of the process as well. This Is not a “paint like me“ workshop, but rather how to think your way through a piece with good decisions.

Brush handling and paint application will be demonstrated and discussed.

The instructor will supply the image and walk everyone through the steps of the painting from the block in to the developed block in to finishing.

About the Artist:

If John had the opportunity to go back and start a few things over, he would have been teaching painting much earlier in his life. The sharing of painterly points of view and insights from some of the great representational artists and teachers of the last 100 or so years has become a passion right along side his own work.

Retired from Curry's after 25+ years has made possible many more such opportunities.

John has gallery representation and is a 20+ year instructor at Haliburton School of Art and Design.
