About the Artist
Donna Montgomery is a versatile multi-media artist who grew up in Northern Ontario . She now resides in Horseshoe Valley, Ontario just north of Toronto.

As an active member of the Algoma Art Society Donna served as its president for two years. As an educator Donna earned her BA, B. Ed and a Visual Arts Specialist as art has always been a passion.

Donna first began painting in oils then became intrigued with the unpredictability and challenge of watercolour. Recently creating unique, colourful non-objective artwork is now part of her creative direction. Her paintings have won awards in local art shows and juried exhibitions. She is currently an active member of the Barrie Art Club.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

MATERIALS NEEDED - Please note you will need to have items marked with an asterisk * as follows:

*1. Gelli plate any size you have (Donna uses 8x10)
- Can be purchased from Amazon or from Gelli Arts

*2. Acrylic paints in various colors:
- Golden Titan Buff, Paynes Grey are good paint colours to pull prints.
- Bring any colours you like and have at home.
(Golden, Amsterdam, Liquitex Basics are good paints for printing with)

*3. Brayer (roller) - paint brushes

4. Palette knife or old credit card

*5. Paper (variety of types and sizes)
- *ie Copy paper, deli paper, rice paper, old book pages, tissue papers, white writing paper
- (bring a variety of papers to try)

*6. Stencils, stamps, lots of found objects for texture (organic-leaves, cedar twigs, plants)
- ie card board, texture plates, burlap, netting, cardboard rolls ….whatever you have

7. Old credit card for mark-making, combs, adhesive spreader from hardware store

*8. Dollar store cheap watercolor pad $3.00
- (We will do a little project with it) or a cheap sketch book 8x10

9. Gesso

*10. Matte Gell medium

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Morning:
- Introduction to the Gelli Plate.

TOPICS:
- Gelli plate care and uses
- Uses of the gelli plate explaining its purpose and how it can be used in printmaking, artwork, and collage projects.
- Demo of how to apply paint to the Gelli plate.
- We'll experiment with different colors, values, neutrals, layering techniques, and mark-making tools to create exciting collage papers.
- Importance of contrast and variety of shapes.
- Experimentation with texture printing using various materials such as bubble wrap, fabric scraps, leaves, and found objects.
- Complex layering and masking techniques to create depth, contrast and negative space unique backgrounds for journals or paintings.

- Demo: Ghost prints used to create subtle backgrounds or to add additional layers of detail to a composition.
- Students will have lots of time to create and explore.

- Morning project is to design a cover for a sketch book or watercolour pad with students preferred colours using the techniques covered.
Session 2
Afternoon:
- Demo: Image transfers from laser copies and magazines using the gelli plate.

- Collage and Mixed Media Project using papers created … plus other interesting papers and text from magazines.
- Create collages in sketchbook or in watercolour pad.
- Reflection and sharing time for suggestions and critiques.
