Class Description
This in-house workshop is best suited for the experienced beginner, intermediate and advanced painters.

So, you’ve always wanted to be a rock star! This workshop focuses on techniques rendering waterfalls and rocks. Is this music to your ears? Sam will discuss the importance of understanding the characteristics of both water and rocks. Editing the composition will also be discussed and “rock solid” tips on using various tools and techniques to effectively capture water and rock subject matter. Artists can use their preferred medium.

Image will be provided by the instructor. However, students are expected to bring their own printed copies or work from tablets or devices. More experienced artists can use their own images if they prefer.

Sam suggests having a lightly tinted cool red under paint.

Demo will be painted in oil. Constructive criticism, encouragement and puns are always included.
About the Artist
Sam Paonessa AOCA, OSA is a graduate from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. His career as a professional artist spanned over 30 years with Hallmark Cards.

During that period Sam traveled and painted plein air landscapes in North America, Italy and Morocco. As an active member of the Ontario Society of Artists he has been sharing his valuable experience gaining recognition as an accomplished painting workshop instructor for numerous art groups across Ontario.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Usual Palette of Colours Acrylic or Oil (Not all necessary use colours you have)
- Cad. Yellow Light or Hansa Yellow
- Alizarin Crimson or Cad. Red Deep
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalo Green or Viridian
- Dioxazine Purple
- Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
- Raw Umber
- Cadmium Orange or other yellow orange
- Quinacridone Magenta or Medium Magenta
- Sap Green
- Ivory Black or Paynes Gray
- Titanium White
- Nice to have but not essential: Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Violet

Mediums: For Acrylic (Golden or Liquitex are quality brands that Sam uses)
- Gesso: small tub (Liquitex or Golden or whatever you may already have)
- *Matte Medium (Fluid) or Floetrol (Paint Extender found at Benjamin Moore Paint stores)

FOR OILS: GAMBLIN Solvent free Gel
- Odourless Mineral Spirits (eg.Gamsol)
Art Surface / Support
Surfaces:
- Mixed media sketchbook for practice (XL Canson) 9”x12”
- Canvas, Birch or Masonite Panels (Good to try various surfaces)
Suggested sizes 12 X 16, 14 X 18

*You may work larger if you are a more experienced painter.

***To be better prepared pre-tint your surface with Pale Red (OR try 2 or 3 combinations, warm and cool, plus gesso to create some texture. Apply with brush, palette knife or brayer. If brighter colour is desired keep underpaint light and/or bright.
Supplies and Tools
- Disposable Palette 9 X 12 or larger

BRUSHES and Other Tools (Synthetic and/or natural hair brushes):
- Variety of sizes of filberts and flats in both bristle and synthetic
- Pointed round #3 or #4 (the better the quality the better the result)
- Sable are excellent but get what is affordable.
- One 2 inch house painting brush (or even wider for applying tints)

SHAPERS:
-Princeton Catalyst White Silicone Mini-blade #4
Handheld shaper W#01
- Sam recommends the angled head which is most useful and the handheld for larger size areas

- Palette Knife – Handy to have a 2 or 3 different size large, medium and small
- (Shape of blade should be medium length that goes to a point like an arrowhead)
- Brayer 2 or 4 inch width ((can be found in printmaking area)(Speedball is a good brand)

- Watercolour Pencils – Ultramarine Blue, Light grey and Raw Umber( if drawing for acrylic painting)
- Apron
- Water container
- Green painters tape (hardware store)
- Nitrile or Latex gloves if desired
- Rags

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Morning:
- There will be an overview of the image and discuss the approach to building an underpainting using texture. The process of interpreting the reference and breaking down the image to simple forms and values.
- Demo approx. 1 hour
- Present key points about colour specifically, relating to value, chroma and temperature.
- Characteristics about colour relating to light and shadow.
- Choosing underpaint colours, tinting versus white base, using warm or cool or both.

Questions can be asked at this time.
- The focus will be on the process of interpreting the reference and breaking down the image to simple forms and values.

- Colour, texture and value will also be discussed and how certain tools can create effective qualities of texture.
- Demo will be done explaining techniques such as underpainting strategy as demonstrated by the instructor.
- Students paint until Lunch time.
Session 2
Afternoon:
- Students paint .
- 30 minutes before end of class stop for creative criticism.
