Class Description
Designs in Abstraction: Viewfinder Images

This in-person, one-day workshop offers participants the opportunity to further explore abstraction through a new creative project. Led by artist Lydia Panart, participants will be guided through the process of developing an abstract painting, from the initial design to the final resolution.

Drawing inspiration from the work of contemporary abstract artists, Lydia will demonstrate how to observe an image from multiple perspectives, including the use of a viewfinder to isolate compelling compositions. Participants will learn how to identify strong abstract designs within a chosen artwork and use these discoveries as the foundation for their own paintings.

Through visual demonstrations, supporting reference materials, and group discussions, Lydia will introduce key artistic concepts such as composition, colour relationships, contrast, transitions, balance, and visual movement. She will also demonstrate a variety of acrylic painting techniques and layering methods to support each participant's individual creative process.

Designed for artists with some previous painting experience, this workshop encourages participants to expand their visual language, strengthen their understanding of design, and develop greater confidence in their own artistic journey.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Acrylic paints: Please bring the colours of your choice taking into account the colour palette of the images you selected to work from. If you have to buy acrylics, it’s always good to have basic colours, such as:

White Gesso (you can use it as a primer or as white paint)
Raw Umber
Ultramarine Blue or Prussian Blue
Phthalo Blue or Phthalo Turquoise
Magenta (or Dioxazine Purple if you already have)
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Pyrrole Red or Cadmium Red Medium
Red Oxide
Yellow Ochre
Art Surface / Support
1 stretched medium size canvas or canvas board either square or rectangular (20”x20” or 20”x16” or the size of your choice)
Please bring them primed with a coat of white gesso.
Supplies and Tools
BRUSHES & PALETTE KNIVES

Please bring the brushes and palette knives you already have. If you have to purchase, this is my suggestion:

Flat Brushes: 1” wide (one synthetic & 1 bristle)
1 plastic or metal palette knife, or 2 of them with a different shape if you already have.

The synthetic brush is good to achieve blending. The bristle one is for other brushwork including dry brush technique. If you have old bristle brushes, bring them too. They are excellent for this technique.
We will use palette knife to apply texture, & for impasto and to spread out paint.
Reference materials
Please bring 2 or 3 colour copies of artworks of your choice. The size of the hardcopies should be big enough for you to be able to find a nice composition/design within the image. We will create a viewfinder to explore the image. You are welcome to use images stored in your phone or IPad and crop them in class.
Misc
MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
Disposable plates, or a disposable paper mixing palette, or aluminum foil
Paper towel, or a rug to clean and dry your brushes
Plastic container (for water)

NOTE: if you would like to take down notes, or try some colour mixings, or sketch some possible compositions, please bring paper or a notebook that takes water media.

Materials Instructor Will Bring:

Materials the instructor will provide
I will bring some sand to create some texture (in case we need it)

Workshop Outline: Complete boxes accordingly (as noted under each box)

Session 1
Morning: Lydia will explore various works by contemporary abstract artists.

She will demonstrate and guide participants on how to take an existing painting and look at it to discern designs and shapes, using a viewfinder, that can be translated into abstract paintings.
Session 2
Afternoon: Participants will be working on their own abstracted designs, based on larger works.

The afternoon will culminate with sharing our learning, offering suggestions, celebrating our artistic creations.
