Class Description
During the first half of this class we will explore the creation of exciting collage papers using various materials and techniques. Our first collages will be practice exercises in a sketch book.

Students will learn how to prepare substrates, and assemble interesting collage pieces stressing the elements and principles of design with a focus on colour theory, shape, texture, and contrast.

In the afternoon we will complete our collage pieces and learn how to mount them onto a wooden cradle board.
About the Artist
Donna Montgomery is a versatile multi-media artist with a background in education. Originally from Northern Ontario Donna Montgomery now resides in Horseshoe Valley, Ontario. Art has always been a passion. As an active member of the Algoma Art Society Donna served as its president for two years. As an educator Donna earned her BA , B. Ed and a Visual Arts Specialist.

Donna began painting in oils then became intrigued with the unpredictability and challenge of watercolour. Recently mixed media abstract art is now part of her creative direction. Her paintings have won awards in local art shows and juried exhibitions. She is currently a member of the Barrie Art Club.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Basically bring what you have at home, any acrylic paint you have:
- Dollar Store acrylic paint is okay for collage
- Choose a cool or warm colour combo
- White gesso
- Black gesso
- Silver or gold paint optional
- Pencils
- Markers
- Acrylic pens

Glues:
- Matte medium good for tissues and lighter papers
- Gel medium for heavy duty papers
- Yes Glue
- White glue
- Glue stick
Art Surface / Support
Surfaces:
- Sketch Books for practice exercises
(bring what you have, as many of these substrates below )
- Bristle Board
- Watercolour Paper
- Multi Media Paper

- We will be cutting these into 4x4 or 6x6 or 8x8 sizes in class (size is your choice).
- They will be gessoed on both sides before we assemble our collages.
- If you want to mount it to a cradle board bring one with you the size you want

Papers:
Any of the following will do (any will work just bring what you have):
- Dollar store paper pads
- Copy paper
- Old books that can be torn up
- Old magazines
- Old letters
- Old music sheets
- Phone books
- White tissue paper
- Brown paper bags
- Black and white Type (lettering) from magazines
- Rice paper...if you have it
Supplies and Tools
Anything goes with collage:
- Paint brushes / stencil brush
- Scissors
- Exacto knife
- Brayer
- Ruler
- Gel plate ( if you have one )
- Water spray bottle
- Wider straws
- Stencils (Donna has lots for people to use)
- Anything that has texture from your home
- Variety of bottle caps or lids
- Toilet rolls

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Morning:
- Demonstration of ways to create collage papers and interesting elements using various materials and techniques and stencils.
- Geli plate demo. How to use it to make collage papers.
- Students will have a chance to explore materials and create their own collage papers using their own neutral, warm, or cool colour palette.
- Demo of assembling a small collage using design elements with an emphasis on colour theory, contrast, shape, and texture.
- First collages will be practice exercises in a sketch book using a neutral palette.
- Preparation of substrates for afternoon session.
Session 2
Afternoon:
- Demonstration of how to assemble a larger 6x6 or 8x8 collage piece stressing the elements and principles of design with a focus on colour theory, shape, texture, and contrast.
- Assembly by students of at least one or two collage pieces working in a cool or warm colour palette.
- Completion of collage pieces and demonstration of how to mount substrate onto a wooden cradle board.
