About the Artist
Hilary Slater has been painting watercolours for over 40 years. She has a Bachelor of Education and teaches students to think outside the box, be playful, breakaway from the tradition of realism. The focus is on finding your own unique style.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Watercolour paints:
- 2 Reds
- 2 Blues
- 2 Yellows
- Black
- White
- Grey

Windsor Newton, or Daniel Smith are recommended.
Art Surface / Support
- 140 lb paper
- Full sheet ARCHES watercolour paper. One per class.
- Pad of cheaper watercolour paper to do experiments on.
Supplies and Tools
- Set of square, round, mop and Rigger brushes

Sketching materials:
- Pencil
- Ink pen
- Fine tip marker

- Masking tape
- Salt
- White wax candle
- Toilet paper 1/2 roll
- Spray bottle with water
Reference materials
- Photos on cell phone if needed.

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Class 1:
- Opening up: courage and beginning abstraction.
- Letting go... from realism to abstraction.
- Starting tight, then loosening up.
Session 2
Class 2:
- Wet on Wet, spraying, colour blending/ colour theory.
Session 3
Class 3:
- Painting playful architectural scenes.
- Drawing, perspective, loose perspective, contrasts, shadow and light.
Session 4
Class 4:
- Putting it all together: abstraction and hard edge combination, working on exploring your own individual style.
- Layering with loose combination.
