Class Description
Join Sharlena Wood to study the history, adventures and artworks of Canada’s beloved Group of Seven and Tom Thomson. Our journey begins with a slideshow of interesting facts about the group and associated artists, then getting our brushes wet with mini studies of composition, process, technique, and stylization. This day will be filled with modern insights and materials with lively discussions that will certainly inspire your own future work!
About the Artist
Sharlena Wood is known for her art material product knowledge, enthusiasm and support in the local artistic community with Curry’s Art Store/Art School, Wallack’s Art Supplies, Tri-Art Acrylics, Craftsy and ZOOM online classes. Sharlena continues to share her passion through collaborative event art, instruction, commissions and creative endeavours in Toronto, Ontario.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Choose your medium.

For Acrylic Painting:
- Substrate: stretched canvas, canvas board, primed masonite or birch panel.
- Range of acrylic paints, such as primary and neutral colours
- A variety of brushes for acrylics
- Palette, water container, rags.

For Soft Pastels:
- Substrate: Sanded Pastel Paper.
- Soft pastels (any format - hard pastels, soft pastels, pastel pencils, pan pastels + Sofft Tools)
- Mask, gloves, tools for blending
- Spray Fixatiff (optional, and to be sprayed at home.
- Please consider a simple piece of tissue paper to safely transport your work to and from studio).

For Watercolour Painting:
- Substrate: 140lb - 300lbs watercolour paper Cold Press or Rough. Stretched.
- Range of watercolour paints, tubes with palette or pan set
- Variety of soft brushes for watercolours
- Water bucket, rags, graphite pencil and kneadable eraser

For Oil Paint Painting:
- Substrate: primed canvas, canvas board, masonite or birch panel.
- Range of oil paints, such as primary and neutral colours
- Alkyd Medium and Linseed or Walnut Oil (no solvents please)
- Variety of hog bristle brushes for oil painting
- Palette, palette knife, rags, brush cleaner, pizza box to transport work.
Art Surface / Support
- Choose your substrate
- Two 8”x10” substrates

- A sketchbook (mixed media pad of paper for composition and notes) and a drawing tool ie. graphite pencil, charcoal pencil, marker, coloured pencils.

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Morning:
- The morning begins with a slideshow and discussion about the Group of Seven: how the group formed, their national influence and key details about the following Members: Franklin Carmichael,
Lawrence Harris, A. Y. Jackson and
Tom Thomson.
- Thumbnails of various works to study compositions, colour theory, method and style.
Session 2
Afternoon:
- Two studies: Tom Thomson + one other member study in your choice of media.
- Please bring a device & cord if you wish to choose your own painting to study, otherwise Sharlena will bring printed reference photos for you to choose from.
