Class Description
This online workshop is best suited for the experienced beginner, intermediate and advanced painters. The workshop focuses on the importance of composition using proven principles of design combined with effective colour. Editing will also be discussed and tips on using various tools and techniques. Artists can use their preferred medium.

Image will be provided by the instructor. However, experienced artists can use their own images if they prefer.

Demo will be painted in acrylic. Constructive criticism, encouragement and puns are also included.
About the Artist
Sam Paonessa AOCA, OSA is a graduate from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. His career as a professional artist spanned over 30 years with Hallmark Cards.

During that period Sam traveled and painted plein air landscapes in North America, Italy and Morocco. As an active member of the Ontario Society of Artists, he has been sharing his valuable experience gaining recognition as an accomplished painting workshop instructor for numerous art groups across Ontario.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Usual Palette of Colours
- Cad. Yellow Light or Hansa Yellow
- Alizarin Crimson or Cad. Red Deep
- Cadmium Red Light
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalo Blue – green shade (also known as Winsor Blue or Phthalocyanine Blue)
- Phthalo Green or Viridian
- Dioxazine Purple
- Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
- Raw Umber
- Cadmium Orange or other yellow orange
- Quinacridone Magenta or Medium Magenta
- Sap Green
- Ivory Black or Paynes Gray
- Titanium White *LARGE Tube or Tub
- Nice to have but not essential, Cerulean Blue

Mediums: For Acrylic (Golden or Liquitex are quality brands that Sam uses)

-Gesso, small tub (Liquitex or Golden or whatever you may already have)

-*Matte Medium (Fluid) or Floetrol(Paint Extender found at Benjamin Moore Paint stores)
Art Surface / Support
Surfaces:
- Mixed media sketchbook for practice (XL Canson) 9”x12”
- Canvas, Birch or Masonite Panels (Good to try various surfaces)
11x14, 12x16, 16x20 - 1 or 2 of each
You may work larger if you are a more experienced painter.

*If doing a series of Square Panels 12x12 or preferred size and or panoramic shape approx. 8x16 or 12x24
It’s always wise to have a few sizes to choose from.

To be better prepared pre-tint your surfaces with any desired colours (try 2 or 3 combinations, warm and cool, plus gesso to create some texture. Apply with brush, palette knife or brayer. If brighter colour is desired, keep underpaint light and/or bright.
Supplies and Tools
BRUSHES and Other Tools (Synthetic and/or natural hair brushes):
- Variety of sizes of filberts and flats in both bristle and synthetic
- Pointed round #3 or #4 (the better the quality the better the result)
- Sable are excellent but get what is affordable.
- One 2 inch house painting brush (or even wider for applying tints)

SHAPERS
- Princeton Catalyst White Silicone Mini-blade #4
Handheld shaper W#01

- Sam recommends the angled head which is most useful and the handheld for larger size areas
- Palette Knife – Handy to have 2 or 3 different size large, medium and small
- (Shape of blade should be medium length that goes to a point like an arrowhead)
- Brayer 2 or 4 inch width ((can be found in printmaking area)(Speedball is a good brand)

Other:
- Disposable Palette 9 X 12 or larger
- Watercolour Pencils – Ultramarine Blue, Light grey and Raw Umber
- Apron
- Water container
- Green painters tape (hardware store)
- Nitrile or Latex gloves if desired
- Rags

- Image will be provided by the instructor and emailed prior to the start of the workshop. Recommend you print out a good quality image.

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
There will be an overview of the image and discuss the approach to create a strong composition.

Questions can be asked at this time.
- The focus will be on understanding the Golden Section and using elements of the landscape to create a dynamic design.

- Colour and value will also be discussed and how they work together to produce a pleasing focal point.

- Demo will be done explaining techniques such as underpainting strategy as demonstrated by the instructor.

- Students may show their work later in the workshop for creative criticism.
