Class Description
Both the Instructor and students will be challenged by a 'SURPRISE' image which will be supplied at the beginning of the class by the Workshop Coordinator.

Barb Ritchie will explain how she plans her painting, by choosing her composition and colours based on the photo. Barb will do a demonstration to show how she follows her plan to complete a pleasing painting. Students will paint throughout the demo with assistance and advice from Barb.

Two paintings will be completed during this workshop.
About the Artist
Barb has actively participated in local art events since the 1980’s. This has included exhibiting at galleries, juried shows, outdoor art festivals and studio tours as well as instructing workshops. She has been active in the Barrie Art Club for many years.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
- Students should bring their usual acrylic paints.
(Note: Barb uses hard body tube paints in a variety of brands. She works using a limited palette of colours.)
- There is no list of colours to buy, however a warm and a cool of red, yellow and blue will be used along with Ultramarine Blue, Transparent Red Iron Oxide and Titanium White.
Art Surface / Support
- Two stretched canvases or canvas boards: approximate size range - 9x12 or 12x12 or 11x14
Supplies and Tools
- Table easel
- Water container
- Paper towels or shop towels
- At least 2 brushes in the #4, 6, or 8 range as well as either a small round or a rigger.
- Palette knife (plastic is okay)
- A palette or palette paper
(Sta-Wet palettes are good for keeping acrylics moist)
- Small sketch book
- Pencil
- *Acrylic Glazing Liquid* will be used.
Reference materials
- Reference images supplied by the Workshop Coordinator
- A small sketch pad and soft pencil will be needed.
(Barb uses a double-headed metal clip to fasten her sketchbook to her easel.)

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
First Session:
- The Instructor and students will be given a 'surprise' image from which they will plan their painting and create a small sketch.
- Working from this sketch, the class will begin a composition which features the texture of aged wood.
- Everyone working on the same scene will help us to focus on learning the working techniques.
- Demonstrations and guidance will be provided by the instructor.
Session 2
Second Session:
- Students will complete their painting started in the first class.
- A second 'surprise' image will be provided in order to begin a second painting.
- The instructor will demonstrate techniques used to create the appearance of rusted metal, then assist students with their paintings.
Session 3
Third Session:
- Following a review, students will complete their second painting with the assistance of the instructor.
- Techniques, equipment, composition and the finished paintings will be discussed.
