Class Description
This workshop focuses on the characteristics of water. Capturing still water reflections, moving water and water surface techniques. Instructor Sam Paonessa will do a water demo. Artists may use the same image (purchase a colour copy from instructor) or use personal photographs.
About the Artist
Sam Paonessa AOCA, OSA is a graduate from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. His career as a professional artist spanned over 30 years with Hallmark Cards.
During that period Sam traveled and painted plein air landscapes in North America, Italy and Morocco. As an active member of the Ontario Society of Artists, he has been sharing his valuable experience gaining recognition as an accomplished painting workshop instructor for numerous art groups across Ontario.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
Oil or Acrylic Paints
- Titanium White (large tube)
- Ultramarine blue
- Phthalo blue
- Indantherene blue (indigo in oils)
- Cad. Yellow light
- Cad. Yellow Deep
- Cad. Red light
- Cad. Red Medium or Pyrrole Red
- Alizarin Crimson
- Phthalo Green
- Sap Green
- Raw Umber
- Dioxazine Purple
- Cad. Or Permanent Orange

- Quinacridone Magenta or Permanent Rose
- Ivory black
- Manganese Blue
- Viridian

Painting Mediums Oil:
- Gamblin Galkyd Gel and odourless solvent for cleaning brushes.
- Or preferred mediums like Liquin or Galkyd.

Arcylic artists:
- Use Matte medium and bring water and container, bowl
Art Surface / Support
- Canvas or masonite, or canvas panels, or something close

- Sizes: 9x12, 12x16, 12x12 (no larger than 18x24 please UNLESS ADVANCED LEVEL)
- 1 or 2 Panoramic shape panels or canvas, approx. 8x16
(These will not all be used but only a suggestion which may be helpful in choosing a size for the work or works)
- Small scrap boards (3 or 4) any size
Supplies and Tools
- Palette (disposable or reusable surface) RECOMMENDED: Sta-Wet Masterson Palette
- Watercolour Pencils or willow charcoal
- Sharpener

- Filberts 3, 4, 8, 10
- Flats 6, 8
- Rounds 1, 2, 4
- Have some flat and round soft hair brushes also

- Paper towels or rags preferred
- Palette Knife (Shape of blade should be medium length that goes to an arrow shape), Metal recommended
- Princeton Catalyst Shaper
- Silicone Shaper No. 4 (angled heads) are very useful for rock and tree textures
Reference materials
- Artists can bring personal photo reference of water subject matter or use what I provide.

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
- Overview of day, present painting samples of water/discuss/questions (possible Power Point presentation)
- Demo
- Artists start painting
Session 2
- Artists continue to paint
- Demo if desired
- Finish about 3:30 pm and have critique of day's work
