Class Description
Creating portraits that achieve a likeness, as well as express your own vibrant artistic interpretation. Using drawing media, we will explore and study light, shadow, shapes, value, edges, anatomical structure, mark-making as it relates to portrait drawing. We will work to improve our ability to see accurately and draw distinctive features to better achieve a likeness - while pushing the boundaries of self expression.

Supplies Students Should Bring:

Paint / art media
- Charcoal: compressed and/or willow (I like Mungyo charcoal soft pastel and Prang charcoal pencils, soft)
- Conté - sanguine or black - pencil or stick
- White charcoal or conté
Art Surface / Support
- 18 x 24" newsprint pad (required for exercises)
- Drawing board and clip to hold paper

Better paper (if desired):
- Strathmore Drawing (available in pads or sheets - recommend minimum size of 11 x 14)
- Zerkall German Ingres paper
- Other appropriate charcoal paper (Canson mi-teintes)
Supplies and Tools
- Knife for sharpening pencils/sticks, if desired
- Kneaded eraser
 

Workshop Outline: Complete: All-4 Class Series, 1 only-Single Session, 1 & 2 - Saturday OR Full Day

Session 1
Morning:
- Slide show giving examples of expressive portrait drawing, various styles and methods.
- Drawing each other's portraits focusing on line, tone and ways of making marks, while maintaining a likeness.
- Attention to shapes and types of mark making.
Session 2
Afternoon:
- Quick demo.
- Lesson on edges, lost edges, drifts, as they relate to portraiture - and how they can be used to express the planes of a face.
- We will draw from a model for a series of poses as we walk through how shapes, values, edges and mark-making relate to portrait drawing.
